IFS Terminale students taking History-Geography, Geopolitics and Political Sciences (HGGSP) had the chance to exchange ideas and opinions via video-conference with Mr Jean-Maurice Ripert. An opportunity for students to debate and ask questions related to their specialist programme of study.
Mr Jean-Maurice Ripert, Ambassador of France; former Permanent Representative of France to the Security Council; former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Ambassador to the Russian Federation and China, spoke to IFS Terminale students who are following the HGGSP specialist course taught by Professors Mrs Delannoy and Mr Husken-Ulbrich
For over an hour, IFS students had the opportunity to discuss such topics with Mr Jean-Maurice Ripert as:
- His diplomatic work and the direction of the United Nations and other International Organisations,
- The role of the UN in the collective construction of peace as well as France’s place in the UN,
- His work in updating international law around the “right to interfere” – the intervention in a state, even without its consent, in the event of a massive violation of human rights
- The importance of multilateralism with an overview of the foreign policies of the United States, Russia and China.
This discussion with the students is part of the HGGSP programme curriculum. Their current theme of study “Making war, making peace: forms of conflict and modes of resolution” benefited from having insights from someone who played an essential role in international affairs and policy.
This chance to discuss complex issues with Mr Jean-Maurice Ripert enriched the students’ knowledge and reflections on the major geopolitical issues of our time. Opportunities like these are an integral addition to student’s preparation for the written and oral exams of the French Baccalaureate.
The history-geography, geopolitics and political science programme provide students with the keys to understanding the past and contemporary world in terms of social, political, economic and cultural relations. By adopting convergent historical and geographic approaches to situations, events and the contexts of areas of study, it constitutes both an opening and a deepening of common educational themes in history-geography. This specialist subject area allows high school students to develop a multidisciplinary approach to historical and geographical analysis, teaching them ways of explaining the complexities of the world of geopolitics.
