Children’s Wishing well, saving children in Singapore

On Friday 23 April, a humanitarian conference took place at IFS for the 5ème students. Students from Terminale presented the association Children Wishing Well, also called CWW, which was founded in 2002. This association helps poor, abandoned or abused children in Singapore.

What is CWW?

Although Singapore is a developed country with a GDP of USD58,597, unfortunately there is no minimum wage and it is one of the most unequal developed countries. Joanna Tan, the chairperson of CWW, says that the aim of the organisation is to enable children to have dreams. Once in the care of the association, the children go to school and receive an education and have the opportunity to do activities such as art, music or even cooking. One of the most interesting activities is a weekly trip to the supermarket to learn how to manage money and choose the right food to eat.

A fascinating story

In her interview, Joanna Tan tells the exciting story of a little girl who escaped from her home where she lived with her grandmother and her abusive father and came to CWW. Since then, she has had a good education, her grades have improved and she is now one of the strongest in her class.

How to participate?

To participate, you can volunteer to help the children and also create balanced meals or make a donation. Another way to participate in the CWW association to help poor children in Singapore is to participate in the virtual auction that is taking place on the IFS Facebook page.

Help, Act, Love…Children Need You 

In a major survey, Children’s Wishing Well says that 14% of families in Singapore live on less than SGD 1,500/month.

Singapore is one of the most unequal countries in the world. That is why the non-profit Children’s Wishing Well, founded in 2002, aims to help poor children in Singapore to build and develop through education and friendship. The president of the association is Joanna Tan. She has been volunteering with several organisations since she was 15 years old.

Poverty in Singapore

Singapore’s GDP per capita of USD 58,597 is very high, but it is also one of the most unequal countries in the world. Several generations of a family can live in one room. There is no minimum wage. Some children work from the age of 13 and are sometimes left to their own devices. It is not uncommon to see elderly people working in the food courts or selling packets of tissues on the street in order to secure food.

The association “Children’s Wishing Well”

CWW supports the poorest children in their schooling and daily life needs as well as their families. The bright orange in their logo stands for energy, happiness and optimism. CWW helps children who are afraid to go to school, who do not have clean clothes, who sleep on the floor but whose parents are absent from their lives.
