GROWING GREEN MINDS AT IFS
IFS: A Green Campus for a Sustainable Future
At the International French School (IFS) in Singapore, sustainability is more than just an initiative—it’s a way of life.
As one of the city’s leading international schools, IFS integrates eco-friendly innovation, renewable energy, and environmental stewardship into its operations and curriculum.
Families seeking a world-class education with a strong commitment to sustainability, innovation, and hands-on learning will find IFS an inspiring choice for their child’s academic journey.
STUDENTS DRIVING REAL CHANGE
Student-Led Sustainability Initiatives

IFS empowers students through its Eco-Delegate Program, where elected representatives lead waste reduction campaigns, energy conservation efforts, and climate awareness projects. These young leaders help create an environmentally responsible campus culture and inspire their peers to take action.
At the prestigious Water4Future Hackathon, students Lena and Robin were named finalists for their innovative rainwater-harvesting building design, which supports a walled garden and generates renewable energy. Competing among 18 high schools worldwide, their project showcased real-world solutions to water conservation and sustainable architecture.
Grade 12 students actively mentor younger students, simplifying climate science and fostering early environmental consciousness. These experiences enhance critical thinking, leadership, and teamwork skills, ensuring students graduate as eco-conscious leaders prepared for an increasingly sustainability-driven world.
SOLAR POWER FUELS IFS SUSTAINABILITY
Harnessing Renewable Energy for a Greener Campus
IFS has made remarkable strides in sustainability through a strategic partnership with TotalEnergies ENEOS, ensuring that the school operates efficiently while reducing its carbon footprint. Across the campus, 1,180 solar panels generate over 900 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable electricity annually, preventing approximately 350 tons of CO₂ emissions annually—the equivalent of powering 200 Singaporean households.
The commitment to sustainability extends beyond infrastructure-
it’s woven into the educational experience. Students actively learn about solar energy, climate action, and sustainable development, giving them first hand exposure to real-world environmental challenges and solutions.
With ongoing solar expansion projects, IFS is well on its way to producing 1,350,000 kWh of renewable energy annually, covering 30% of the school’s total energy needs.

PIONEERING SUSTAINABILITY IN EARLY EDUCATION
A Zero-Energy Kindergarten: Where Innovation Begins

IFS’s new Kindergarten is setting new standards in sustainable school design.
It operates as a zero-energy building that generates as much energy as it consumes. Designed with solar-powered infrastructure, energy-efficient cooling, and sustainable materials, this innovative space ensures a comfortable, eco-conscious environment for young learners.
By exposing children to green technology and environmental responsibility at an early age, IFS fosters an awareness of sustainability that stays with them throughout their education.
This state-of-the-art Kindergarten is not only a place of learning but also a model for eco-friendly international school development in Singapore.
By harmonising structured pedagogy with creativity and flexibility, IFS Kindergarten helps children develop essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity, laying a strong foundation for academic and personal success.
OPTIMISED COMFORT WITH MINIMAL ENERGY WASTE
Smart Cooling & Energy-Efficient Design
IFS recognises that a comfortable learning environment should not come at the cost of excessive energy consumption.
That’s why the school has implemented smart cooling systems that dynamically adjust air-conditioning levels based on room occupancy and weather conditions. These intelligent cooling technologies optimise energy use, reduce operational costs, and extend the lifespan of the air-conditioning units.
In addition, energy-efficient ceiling fans, high-performance windows, and aerated lightweight concrete (ALC) walls enhance natural ventilation, reducing the need for artificial cooling.
By integrating passive cooling techniques with advanced technology, IFS successfully creates an optimal learning environment while reducing its environmental footprint.

SMART WATER SOLUTIONS
Water Conservation & Sustainable Irrigation

Water is one of our planet’s most valuable resources, and at IFS, sustainability extends to responsible water management.
The kindergartens’ rainwater harvesting system captures 100% of rainfall from building rooftops and stores it in underground detention tanks with a 547,000-liter capacity. This collected water is recycled and used for irrigation, ensuring the school’s lush greenery remains vibrant without excessive reliance on municipal water supplies.
Additionally, the school has implemented a natural filtration system, where rainwater is purified through plants and soil before being reintroduced into the ecosystem.
This system reduces water waste, minimises flooding risks, and teaches students about sustainable urban water management.
